RACING

Racing is at the heart of CYC’s activities. The Oregon
Offshore Race remains the only international sailing event in Oregon, starting
off the mouth of the Columbia and finishing 200 miles later in Victoria, British
Columbia. This is a major event in all respects, and is attracting increasing
attention from outside the local area. Columbia River races include the CYC summer Evening Series, the Couple’s race, the CYC Fall Series,
the Friday Night Beer Can races and the Six Pac Race.
EDUCATION
Besides the informal work to help CYC members get "up to
speed" on the race course, each year CYC sponsors a race seminar. Topics
can cover racing rules, optimal sail selection and trim, boat preparation, crew
organization, racing tactics and various other go-fast topics. This seminar has
been very popular with sailors new to racing as well as with successful
veterans.
SOCIAL EVENTS
In addition to the awards socials following its races, CYC
sponsors a number of events for club members each year. Each month holds in
store an event such as the West Marine night where members enjoy a 10% discount
on all items or a relaxed evening social providing a chance to get to know other
members and share stories. A complete calendar of events, race results, general
club news and member profiles is published each month in the CYC Newsletter.
MEMBERSHIP
Our
two primary classes of membership are
"Racing" and "Non-racing". Racing membership is open to owners of yachts and they are automatically registered in
CYC sponsored river races. Elected officers may be either Racing or Non-racing members, so
the Non-racing membership is an ideal way for crew to participate in club
administration and in decisions that help shape sailboat racing on the Columbia.
Dues are used to support racing activities,
social events and club administration.
